A BYU teacher's reflection

Craig was one of my public speaking students at BYU in Winter 2006. He was warm, animated and insightful. He worked hard to develop his skills which I assured him would serve him well in his pursuit of a career as a chiropractor.

At a evening concert in Winter 2007, I walked through the foyer and picked up a program from a student with a familiar face--Craig. But I suddenly noticed his right arm was heavily bandaged and much shorter.

I choked back tears as I looked into his face and asked--"Craig, what happened?" He told me the story and described his new plans. I felt so devastated and elevated at the exact same moment.

What a gift he has been to me--it was a privilege to teach him. I am grateful for what I learned from Craig and know that he has changed me forever. He will be deeply missed by an immense circle of friends. I am praying for each of his family members to be blessed with peace.
