I met Craig when he moved into the FLSR in January 2007, just after he lost his hand. I lived in the German House; he lived directly below me in the Spanish House. It seemed that a lot of people, myself included, were somewhat unsure about the sensitivity of the topic. Would it make him uncomfortable to ask about it? Should we act as if we didn't notice his missing hand? Is it an emotionally sensitive issue? Craig was probably more secure about his new condition than anyone else. I think he actually enjoyed not having his right hand. When I discovered this, I asked him all about it, especially about phantom limb and phantom pain, which I was especially curious about. He told me all about it and about the fun he'd had using it to play pranks on people.
Not only did Craig not allow the accident to dampen his spirit; he didn't even allow it to create too much focus, negative or positive, on himself. He kept focused on and interested in other people and their situations. That, to me, was the most impressive part.
